Gender-diverse Children and Psychological Well-being in Canada

Psychological Wellbeing

Most gender diverse children have healthy levels of psychological wellbeing. Nevertheless, many face a lack of social acceptance and experience lower psychological wellbeing.

For those who do, they face challenges such as depression, anxiety, aggression and identity related stress. In some cases, they may express suicidal thoughts or engage in self-harming behaviours. Gender-diverse children experience such challenges at rates that are 2-3 times greater than other children.

Overall, the level of mental health support needed for genderdiverse children is often overlooked, misunderstood, and misrepresented, which may leave these issues unaddressed, and perpetuate poor well being.
